Sol Rebel: branding a bright future
Sol Rebel is the brainchild of an energetic Bay Area entrepreneur with lots of industry experience. He is building a company offering solar energy expertise and thought leadership, from engineering and construction management to education.
The owner is committed to challenging accepted norms of the solar industry, and came to us with the “Sol Rebel” name.
The challenge: create an identity for the new company from scratch – one that resonates with the owner’s ideals, and stands out in the crowded solar energy sector.
The discovery interview produced a number of visual directions linked to the concepts of energy, paradigm-shifting, and thought leadership. We decided a wordmark with a separable icon would give the brand the most visual flexibility.
Including the sun is common in solar company logos, and there’s a solid “first glance” reason for this. The challenge became including it in a meaningful way. The answer was to blend it with a compass rose (representing navigation and leadership), creating an iconic symbol at the literal center of the identity.
The color palette underscores this with blue for the sky/earth/ocean, and warm, rich gold for the sun.
To further communicate the natural/technical nature of solar power, we created a brand-basic background image – a leaf pattern, with a superimposed solar power wiring diagram.
Secondary usage superimposes the logo on natural and urban settings requiring navigation (ocean/forest/dense skyscrapers) all including sunlight as an integral element.
